Some outdoor kitchens are designed to cook.

Others are designed to gather.

This coastal outdoor kitchen in Plymouth, Massachusetts was created to do both.

From the very beginning, the vision extended far beyond cabinetry and appliances. The homeowners wanted an outdoor living space where family and friends could spend entire afternoons together – cooking, swimming, relaxing by the fire, watching the game, and sharing meals without ever needing to step back inside.

Working alongside Topnotch Design Studio, the result is a thoughtfully planned outdoor kitchen that feels every bit as intentional as the home's interior while embracing everything that makes outdoor living special.

A Home Designed Around Outdoor Living

When designer Christina J. McCabe first visited the property, she immediately recognized its potential.

Unlike some projects that require careful compromises, this expansive site offered enough room to bring the homeowners' complete wish list to life.

The outdoor pavilion would become the heart of a larger destination that includes:

  • A resort-inspired swimming pool and spa
  • A fireplace lounge
  • Dedicated dining areas
  • A bocce court
  • Multiple gathering spaces
  • A fully equipped luxury outdoor kitchen

What made the project even more unique was that the homeowners had lived with an outdoor kitchen before; they already understood how often it would be used and knew exactly what worked for the way they entertained.

Instead of asking whether they needed an outdoor kitchen, they focused on creating one that performed as beautifully as it looked.

Designing an Outdoor Kitchen Without Compromise

For the homeowners, every decision centred around one question:

“How can this kitchen make entertaining feel effortless?”

Designer Christina J. McCabe approached the space intentionally, creating distinct spaces for cooking, prep, service and gathering.

A generous central island anchors the layout, allowing guests to remain part of the cooking experience, while providing abundant seating for casual meals and conversation.

Separate bar and food preparation sinks improve workflow, while dedicated beverage and food refrigeration keep everything within easy reach during gatherings.

Perhaps most importantly, the design proves that a feature-rich outdoor kitchen doesn't have to sacrifice storage. Integrated waste pull-outs, deep drawers, and thoughtfully planned cabinetry ensure cookware, utensils, and entertaining essentials all have a place.

The Heart of the Gathering

The homeowners already knew one thing they wanted to include: an EVO griddle.

Having enjoyed one in their previous home, they knew it would play an important role in everything from weekend breakfasts to casual dinners with family and friends. The design team integrated it into the spacious island, allowing cooking to become part of the conversation rather than separate from it.

Because NatureKast cabinetry is engineered to accommodate a wide range of outdoor appliances and accessories, the team was able to seamlessly incorporate the EVO while maintaining a cohesive, furniture-inspired design. The result is a kitchen where standout features enhance the experience without compromising on storage, functionality, or aesthetics.

Surrounded by generous seating, the island naturally draws people together, creating a welcoming place to cook, connect, and entertain. It's a space designed not just for preparing meals, but for sharing them, where everyday moments and special occasions unfold around great food and good company.

A Coastal Palette Inspired by the Landscape

The home's coastal architecture provided the foundation for the material palette.

The classic Shaker door style from NatureKast’s Signature Collection reinforces the timeless character of the space, while allowing the architecture and craftsmanship to take centre stage. The Natural Blonde finish pairs beautifully with the surrounding seagrasses and natural landscape, introducing warmth without competing with the environment.

Dark natural stone countertops create contrast against the lighter cabinetry, while stainless steel appliances add a refined, professional feel that complements the home's understated coastal aesthetic.

Why NatureKast

For Topnotch Design Studio, material selection is about more than durability.

The team wanted the flexibility to design an outdoor kitchen with the same creativity and level of customization typically associated with interior cabinetry.

NatureKast offered exactly that. Designer Christina J. McCabe was able to use NatureKast's vast moulding and panel offering to create custom planked pilasters that bring character to the space from every angle.

With a wide selection of door styles, finishes, and accessories, the cabinetry allowed the design to feel tailored instead of utilitarian. Unlike many outdoor kitchen systems built around modular metal cabinets, NatureKast gave the designers the freedom to create a kitchen that feels fully integrated with the home's architecture while providing the weatherproof performance required outdoors.

More Than an Outdoor Kitchen

Although the cabinetry serves as the visual anchor, what makes this project memorable is the lifestyle it supports.

The homeowners envisioned a place where weekends naturally unfold outdoors, from morning coffee around the island to afternoon swims, lobster boils, evenings around the fire, and late-night conversations under the pavilion.

Built-in heaters extend the season well into the cooler months, making the space just as inviting during crisp fall evenings as it is midsummer.

It's a reminder that the best outdoor kitchens don't simply add appliances to the backyard.

They create a destination.

Designer Insight

When asked what homeowners should know before beginning an outdoor kitchen project, designer Christina J. McCabe offered one piece of advice:

"Know your wish list and collaborate with your designer. Outdoor kitchens have unique planning requirements, and working with someone who understands those details will save time while helping you create a space that truly reflects how you want to live."
